What is a Subluxation?
Subluxation is a term used in the chiropractic field to describe what happens when one or more of the vertebrae in your spine move out of position. When this happens, the misaligned vertebra creates pressure and stress on the spinal nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding muscles. This pressure and stress causes an imbalance in the body's normal processes, because it is through the nervous system that we coordinate the function of every cell, organ and tissue in the body. Immediately, or over time, interference to the nervous system can translate to pain, dysfunction and/or disease.
As time goes on and the uncorrected subluxation settles, the damage to the nerve gets progressively worse and different stages of subluxation degeneration (joint degeneration) set in.
How Does Subluxation Occur?
There are three major causes of subluxation (joint dysfunction): physical, chemical and mental/emotional stressors. Examples of Physical stressors are: car accidents, falls, a sudden jar or trauma are all examples of unique instances that may cause a subluxation. Other occurrences of subluxation come from regular actions such as improper sleeping position, poor posture, one sided repetitive movements or incorrect lifting processes.
Chemical stressors include: toxins in the air we breathe and water we drink, pesticides and herbicides in the food we eat, poor diet, prescription or recreational drugs and smoking to name a few. Examples of Mental/Emotional stressors are: hectic lifestyle, job or school stress and abusive relationships.
